.KEY MESSAGES...
1. Morning occurrences of Tule Fog will be conceivable through
the week as high pressure aloft persists.

2. Dry conditions with seasonal afternoon highs will prevail in
the meantime.

3. Cold morning lows are forecast on Tuesday morning and again
on Wednesday morning. There is a 15-30% chance of morning lows
being at or less than 32*F on Wednesday morning for rural
locations in the San Joaquin valley.

4. A weak disturbance is forecast to pass over the northern
portion of the forecast area this weekend. Currently, there is a
30-50% chance of at least 3 inches of snow at the higher
elevations of Yosemite National Park.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A relatively quiet weather pattern is upon is for Central
California this week. After a weak impulse-like disturbance
impacted the region yesterday, high pressure in the Eastern
Pacific is the main weather feature. This means that morning fog
will remain a possibility each morning through the San Joaquin
Valley through at least Friday. Morning fog lifting into
afternoon stratus deck also will pose intermittent visibility
issues for the passes in Kern County, which is happening today
as the Grapevine sees patchy fog a drizzle this afternoon.

Latest HREF data show chance of visibility being less than 1/4
of a mile tomorrow morning ranging from about 20-50% north of
Kings/Tulare County. Fog chances trend much in the south valley
for Tuesday morning. Wednesday morning/New Year`s morning looks
more favorable per the HREF in terms of coverage, with nearly
the entire San Joaquin Valley looking at chances of visibility
being less than 1/4 of a mile. Fog chances continue through the
work week as high pressure in the Eastern Pacific continues to
remain in place.

Temperatures across region will be seasonal for afternoon highs,
with cold morning lows. Probabilistic guidance has trending
slightly warmer for the valley this afternoon for lows reaching
32*F. Currently seeing less than a 5% probability for morning
lows to hit freezing on Tuesday morning. Wednesday morning as of
this writing looks more favorable for lows to hit freezing, with
NBM probabilistic guidance showing up to a 20% chance of lows
being 32 or colder. NBM guidance shows low trending upwards
slightly through the end of the week, leading to a low threat of
a freeze.

Quiet conditions across the region are forecast through Friday
morning. Ensemble guidance is showing a disturbance reaching
the northern periphery of our forecast area by late Friday
morning to Friday afternoon. The main impacts from this system
would be a slight chance of rain showers in the valley north of
Kern County, and light snow in the Sierra Nevada. Snow levels
will be fairly high on Friday, starting at around 8,500 feet in
the morning then falling to around 6,500 feet at night.
Currently, NBM probabilities shows a 30-50% chance of 3 inches
of snow or greater at the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada
north of Fresno County - including Yosemite National Park. Light
rain/snow are projected to end by Saturday morning. In the long
term, ensemble guidance is favoring the ridge pattern to
continue through next weekend, with some indications of a
shortwave disturbance making its way into the forecast area by
the following Monday.
